Ayatriada Community News Page
This page will provide news and links to news items about our community. As some of you may know, we have shared our facilities for some time with the Chaldean Catholic refugee community from the Eparchy of Diyarbekir in southeastern Turkey, where civil unrest has caused many Christians to flee this traditionally Christian region. Their bishop, Paul Karatas, resided for many years on the second floor of our building and we shared use of our church.
Our community news will reflect this sharing as well as our joint activities with our sister communities, especially those in Athens and Giannitsa.
1) The Attack on our neighbor, the British Consulate.
2) The passing of Chaldean Catholic Bishop of Diyarbekir, Paul Karatas (scroll down to article with photo)
3) Relief efforts to aid Iraqi Chaldean and Syriac Catholic refugees in Istanbul by Fr. Francis Yakan
and Fr. Joseph Sag
4) Pilgrimages
We are of course concerned about the growing sense of insecurity that afflicts our people of whatever Church or rite who are citizens and residents of this marvelously culture-rich and history filled country. It should be noted by those who harbor evil or offensive thoughts toward their Christian countrymen that the elimination of a diverse and living Christian presence in Turkey will definitively tarnish that image of cultural richness and add a sad confirmatory note to a historical record that was opened nearly a century ago.
Άξιος! Άξιος! Άξιος! (Axios! Axios! Axios!)
to our New Exarch, Bishop Demetrios. Χρόνια Πολλά!!!
On April 23, 2008 the Archpriest Demetrios Salachas was named to succeed our beloved Exarch, Bishop Anarghyros Printesis, who had submitted his resignation on the grounds of failing health. Our prayers and best wishes go forth on behalf of our new Exarch as he shepherds our flock at this troubled yet auspicious time, and we always remember in prayer and love our out-going Exarch, Bishop Anarghyros, who has given so much of his life for his flock. For more details see the excerpt from the Exarchate website's news page that appears below. Although the Exarch in Athens is not directly responsible for our community under the (in this case) ironic vagaries of canon law, as the only Greek Catholic Exarch and the one whose own territory borders ours, he is our spiritual leader and is charged to provide spiritual aid to those of us who are without there own shepherd at this time. Άξιος! Άξιος! Άξιος!
